6 Steps Jesus Took to Become Your Spiritual Food

Are you looking for real spiritual food?

Are you spiritually hungry?…Looking for real spiritual food to fill the emptiness you feel deep inside?

You may have even been a Christian for many years. Yet, you still feel that you are not receiving the real spiritual supply that you need to grow in Christ and to live a normal Christian life.

If so, I can sympathize, because that was also my condition.

In this post, I’ll focus on how you can receive real spiritual food. I’ll start by considering the steps God took to make Christ your spiritual food. Then I’ll  present practical steps you can take to be nourished by Him.

Here are 6 steps God took to make Jesus your spiritual food:

1. Jesus was incarnated to be a man—John 6:27, 32-33

There was no way that we could come to God. But thankfully, God came to us. The Father gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to be the true bread out of heaven (John 6:32).

 Jesus told us,

“For the bread of God is He who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.” (John 6:33)

The Jews hearing His words, were familiar with the manna that God rained from heaven in the days of Moses (Exo. 16). They asked Him to do a similar miracle to give them physical bread. They failed to see God’s intention to make Christ their spiritual food.

They didn’t realize that Jesus, who was standing before them, was the  true bread out of heaven. His coming to this earth was the real miracle.  It was the first step God took to make Christ your spiritual food—the bread of life.

You may want to pray,

“Lord thank you for humbling Yourself to come to this earth, to become a man so that You could become my spiritual food.”

 2. Jesus was slain on the cross—6:51b-55

Most believers realize that Jesus had to be crucified on the cross to redeem man, to take away the sins of the world (John 1:29). That’s correct.

But have you ever considered that Jesus had to be slain so that He could be processed to become your spiritual food? For any living thing to become edible, it has to be killed, it has to pass through some process so that you can eat it.

That’s exactly what Jesus did. He died on the cross, not only to redeem you, but as part of the  process to become your spiritual food.

Jesus even said,

“The bread which I will give is my flesh, given for the life of the world…Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood you do not have life in yourselves.”  (John 6:51b, 53)

It’s when we receive by faith what Jesus did in giving His body for us and shedding His blood for us that we receive Him as our spiritual food.

 Simply tell the Lord,

“Thank you Lord Jesus that You offered Yourself up on the cross not only to redeem me that I may be forgiven of my sins, but to release Your divine life to be my spiritual food.”

 3. Jesus was resurrected to indwell you—6:56-57

However, for Jesus to become your spiritual food, becoming a man and dying on the cross was not enough. He had to rise from the dead so He can indwell you and be your life.

 Jesus said,

“ As the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me shall live because of Me.” (John 6:57)

For Jesus to “live because of the Father” after being slain means that God raised Him from the dead. It is only by His becoming the resurrected Christ that you can eat Him as your spiritual food and live because of Him.

Simply tell the Lord,

“Lord Jesus, I believe that  the Father raised You from the dead so that You can now be my spiritual food. Lord, show me how to eat You, to live because of You every day.”

4. Jesus ascended to the heavens—6:60-62

Jesus not only resurrected, but also ascended to the heavens as the proof that God accepted what He accomplished on the cross for you. Since God accepted what Jesus did for you,  you can now boldly come to eat Him as your spiritual food without fear or guilt.

 5. Jesus became the Spirit who gives life—6:63:

By His resurrection, Christ became a life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45) so that He can now dispense Himself into you as real spiritual food—that is, to be “spirit and life” to you.

Jesus said,

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” (John 6:63)

6. Jesus is embodied in His life-giving words–6:63, 68

From John 6:63, we can also see that it is the Lord’s words that are spoken to us that are spirit and life—spiritual food.

When many of His disciples left Him because of His difficult saying about eating Him, Jesus asked the twelve disciples, “Do you also want to go away? Peter answered Him,

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)

Here is the key to eating Christ as your spiritual food—come to His words to contact and receive Him as the Spirit who gives life!

Now Jesus Christ has done everything needed to become the spiritual food to nourish you.  But there is still your part. What must you do?

Here are 6 steps you can take to “eat Jesus” as your spiritual food—your living bread:

1.  Seek Him, “the food that abides unto eternal life”–6:27

Set your heart to seek after the Lord  as your spiritual food. If you’re occupied with something else—miracles, knowledge, etc. and fail to seek after Christ Himself as the true bread, you will  leave hungry.

2.  Come to Him–6:35a

Jesus said, I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall by no means hunger… (6:35; 5:39-40).

Calling on His name is one of the simplest ways I know to come to Jesus. By calling, you contact Him instantly. In fact, when we say, “Jesus is Lord or Lord Jesus, you’re in the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:3).

3.  Believe into Him–6:35b

He also said, he who believes into Me shall by no means thirst (6:35b).  You can exercise your spirit of faith by your speaking (2 Cor. 4:13). Just speak to the Lord Jesus.

Simply ask Him to feed you with Himself as the living bread. You may want to make the chorus of this hymn your prayer:

“Feed me Lord Jesus./ Give me to drink. / Fill all my hunger. /Quench all my thirst./ Flood me with joy./Be the strength of my life./ Fill all my hunger quench all my thirst.”

4.  Receive the cleansing of His blood–6:53-54

It is only the Lord’s cleansing blood that can give us the right to eat of Him (Rev. 22:14). Simply receive by faith what Jesus did in dying for you. Just pray,

“Lord Jesus,  cleanse me with Your precious blood. I confess my sins to You.”

Begin to read the Bible, turning each verse that touches you into instant words of prayer, petition, thanks, praise or singing. For more details of this point  you  may want to read, 12 Tips on How to Pray-reading the Lord’s Word to Be Spiritually Nourished.

6.  Contact Him as the Spirit in the Word–6:63

It is only the Spirit who gives life. Exercise your spirit to touch the Spirit in the Word.  When we touch the Spirit in the Word we get the Lord’s instant words which are spirit and life to us—real spiritual food.

  1. Thanks for sharing this post…I received a fresh appreciation of the processes the our God has passed through and the way to eat Him based on one chapter of John. I quite impressed for this realization. The Bible is really inspired by God! Thanks bro. Tom.

Thanks for the confirming reply. I am freshly impressed that the processes our Lord went through in John 6 were not just to save us from perdition but to become our spiritual food. God’s intention from the beginning was that man would eat Him as signified by the tree of life (Gen. 2:9). In this way we can be filled with God in order to express God. When we see that our Lord’s desire to dispense Himself into us, we’ll spontaneously seek after Him as the food that abides to eternal life and take these simple steps to eat Him in order to live because of Him (John 6:57).

  2. Thank you Tom for a wonderful meditation on the true food. Reminds me also of,
