3 Simple Prayers to Rekindle Your Love for the Lord
Have you ever felt that your love for the Lord Jesus has grown cold or stale? I know that I have.
Proper prayers, especially in your morning time with the Lord, can rekindle your love for Him.
Read what the lover said in the Song of Songs:
“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.” (S.S. 1:2)
This verse expresses God’s deep desire for us to love Him, to enter into an intimate and romantic relationship with Him.
From Adam and Eve in the garden (Gen. 2:18-23) to the Lamb and His bride, the New Jerusalem (Rev. 19:7; 21:2), the Bible consistently reveals God’s central thought, even His deepest longing to have a love relationship with us.
But, I’m afraid that many of us, have never been deeply attracted by the Lord’s love (S.S. 1:2) or possibly, and quite sadly, may have lost our first and best love for Him. Revelation 2:4 says,
“But I have one thing against you, that you have left your first love.”
So in this post I’ll present three simple prayers to rekindle and maintain your fresh and intimate love for the Lord.
Here are three prayers to rekindle your love for the Lord:
First, tell the Lord that you need Him and are totally dependent on Him.
Honestly, it’s the truth. The Lord said to His disciples, “…apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5b). If we have spiritual insight, we’ll see that anything we do apart from the Lord is worth nothing in God’s sight—having no spiritual value, even if we’ve accomplished a lot.
It’s important to realize that it was God’s desire from the beginning, that we would be fully dependent on Him, that He would be our life, life supply, and everything.
It was man’s independence from God that got man into the trouble in the first place. In fact, this is the most evil thing in the eyes of God.
“For My people have committed two evils: / They have forsaken Me, / The fountain of living waters, / To hew out for themselves cisterns, / Broken cisterns, / Which hold no water.” (Jer. 2:13)
Every matter of life, both physically and spiritually is dependent. Breathing, drinking and eating are all matters of dependence. Since all the physical things are shadows of the spiritual reality, we can see from this how God wants to be our life—our food (John 6:35), our drink (7:37) and our breath (20:22).
Moreover, as our real Husband, God wants us to acknowledge our need for Him and to be fully dependent on Him. So it’s just good to tell the Lord,
“Lord Jesus, I really need you and am fully dependent on you today.”
Second, tell the Lord that you open your entire being to Him.
To receive anything of life, you have to be open. Physical breathing, drinking and eating all require you to open yourself—your nose, your mouth, your lungs, etc. Similarly, we need to practice opening ourselves to the Lord every day, especially first thing in the morning.
God considers us as His vessels and it is His desire to fill us with Himself, but this requires us to be open. Romans 9:23-24a says,
“In order that He might make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He had before prepared unto glory, even us…”
Since God desires to dispense all that He is into us, our best cooperation with Him is to open ourselves to Him as much as we can.
For us to rekindle our first and best love for the Lord, we need to practice opening our heart to Him every day. I’ve found that it really helps to open your mouth and cry out to Him.
The Lord promised in Psalm 81:10,
“Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.”
Just call on the name of the Lord. He promises to be rich to all those who call on Him (Rom. 10:12).
Simply tell Him,
“Lord Jesus, I open my entire being to you without reservation. Lord, fill me with yourself today.”
Such a genuine opening is what our Bridegroom, Christ is looking for. We need to open to our Beloved again and again.
Third, tell the Lord Jesus that you love Him with all your heart.
“And you shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart and from your whole soul and from whole mind and from your whole strength.” (Mark 12:30)
Often we don’t feel very loving, but God will back up our speaking. This may be the case even with some good marriages—not a lot of romantic feeling. However, it still remains that we need to speak something by faith even when we don’t feel like it. Faith goes first, feelings follow.
As you speak it, God will back you up and fill your heart with the reality of what you say. Simply tell the Lord,
“Lord Jesus, You are my first love. Lord, I love you with all my heart.”
See if these three simple prayers don’t usher you into a more intimate, loving relationship with the Lord Jesus. As we love the Lord Jesus, we enjoy Him. Then He grows in us and reveals to us all the secrets of His heart.
“But as it is written, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard and which have not come up in man’s heart; things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Cor. 2:9)
Personally, I like to begin each day by telling the Lord I need Him and am utterly dependent on Him, that I fully open to Him, and that I love Him with my whole being. Simple as it may seem, the reality of such words can change your life. Such prayers can usher you into a fresh, intimate experience of Christ, and bring you into the divine romance that is the goal of the entire Bible.
Try it and see for yourself…And, if you found these three prayers helpful, please share your experience in a comment.

Lord Jesus I love you, and continue to anoint this brother whom be a blessing to us.
Lord Jesus, I open my entire being to you without reservation. Lord, fill me with yourself today.” Amen.
Thank you Christ Beloved Brother.
Amen. It’s so good to tell the Lord Jesus that we totally depend on Him, love Him with all our heart, and open our entire being to Him.
Thanks for the confirming comment.
“Often we don’t feel very loving, but God will back up our speaking. …Faith goes first, feelings follow.” – I see that this is true to experience. Sometimes, I feel like an impostor saying this to the Lord. But the more I say it, the more it becomes real. The Lord is lovelier than ever!
It is so good that God doesn’t ask us to feel loving. Rather, He says that we have received a “spirit of faith” in which we speak (2 Cor. 4:13). May we daily speak by faith our best love for the Lord Jesus, “Lord Jesus, You are so precious to me! Lord, You’re my first and best love. Keep me in the freshness of Your love all day today. Lord, You are so sweet!.”
“It was man’s independence from God that got man into the trouble in the first place. In fact, this is the most evil thing in the eyes of God.” – Indeed this is true to my experience. Whenever I do things apart from Him, I felt that I’m so far from Him and got into trouble. “O Lord, keep us fully dependent on You”
Amen. I’m so glad that we not only know that Christ lives in us, but that by the sense of His indwelling Spirit, we can be kept from independence. As we learn to contact Him in our spirit by calling on His name, and praying to behold Him, inquire of Him and fellowship with Him, we can live a dependent life. This kind of living brings us deeper into the divine romance and fills us with Christ. Thanks for the encouraging comment.
Lord, these days are the consummation of the age. Lord, in these days, rekindle my love for You! Lord Jesus, I love You!
When we see the vision that the Bible is a divine romance (from Gen 2:18-23 to Rev 21:2 & 22:17) and that the Lord Jesus is longing to return for His bride, we’re constrained to be the “Lord Jesus I love you people.” We need to be reminded again and again that loving the Lord is beginning of all genuine spiritual pursuit issuing in growth that will prepare us to be Christ’s bride.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I thought each prayer was right on point. There is no better way to start the day then to let your first love know how much you adore, need, want and appreciated Him in your life.
Love for the Lord Jesus, like any living person, requires constant renewing or rekindling. We do need the continual reminder that our love for the Lord needs to be watered, because it’s living. We need to daily tell the Lord from our heart that we need Him, depend on Him, open to Him and love Him with our best love. By speaking such words in the spirit of faith (2 Cor 4:13) we we give the Lord the way to rekindle our best love for Him.
Was really encouraging while reading this post today. Having quality time with God each morning has become the most important thing of my life even though I have not started long ago, but I already felt the empowerment of this relationship and routine. However, I didn’t realize there is power in what we spoke and what we declared as recently i felt my love for God has grown cold. So this is such a great article to just remind me that I am on the right track of keeping on confessing my love towards him and thank him for his faithfulness. Thank God for leading me to read this article today. I believe it is not a coincidence, I felt SUPER relatable with what you wrote in the article.
We need to daily renew our love for the Lord. It’s good to start each new day by telling the Lord Jesus we love Him, we’re open to Him and we’re fully dependent on Him. If we really love a person, we will also make time to listen to what is on their heart. We need to consider the Bible not as a book of teachings but as God’s love letter to us and listen to and breathe in His every word. We need to tell the Lord, “Make the desire of Your heart, the desire of my heart. While I read Your Word, open my ears to hear what is on Your heart.” To go along with this practice, I highly recommend the Recovery Version with footnotes. You can read it online at: Online.RecoveryVersion.org …Also Bibles for America gives away free copies of the Recovery Version (in USA). I recommend it because it has helped me to appreciate and love the the Lord Jesus more as the most lovely Person.
