The Spirit as Our Bountiful Supply
The Spirit is the second crucial element of the Bible. However, this extract does not refer to the Spirit of God in a general way as in creation (Gen 1:2), but to the Spirit as the Spirit of Jesus Christ after Christ’s death and resurrection (Phil 1:19). Such a Spirit is the unique Spirit of God who has been compounded with all the ingredients of Christ’s person and processes as the bountiful supply for our Christian life.
In this post we’ll consider how the Spirit today has been compounded to be our bountiful supply.
The Consummation of the Triune God after all His Processes—2 Cor. 13:14
This Spirit is the wonderful consummation of all that the Triune God—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit is (2 Cor. 13:14). In the mysterious anointing oil revealed in Exodus 30:23-25, there were added precious spices in the measure of three units of 500 shekels with the middle unit being split. The number three signifies the Triune God, and the second (or middle) unit of 500 shekels being split (250/250) indicates that the second of the Triune God was “split”—pierced for us on the cross.
When we get this Spirit, we don’t just get one-third of God. We get all that He is, the entire Triune God, reaching us as the Spirit. This is just as the river of water of life (signifying the Spirit—John 7:37-39) in the New Jerusalem flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb as its source (Rev. 22:1) bringing all that the Triune God is to us for our drinking. May we be daily reminded to drink this Spirit by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus (1 Cor. 12:13, 3). Compounded with Divinity and Humanity—Exodus 30:23-25
The Spirit that we enjoy today first has the base of divinity (the pure olive oil signifying the unique Spirit of God—v. 24). Through Christ’s incarnation, human living, death and resurrection, humanity was compounded into this ointment (signified by the four spices—myrrh, cinnamon, calamus and cassia). This is how we can say according to 1 Corinthians 15:45b that, “the last Adam [Christ] became a life-giving Spirit,” without compromising the existence of the divine trinity. For Christ to be the life-giving Spirit indicates that all that Christ is has now been compounded into this unique Spirit.
When we get the Spirit, we get Christ
So the wonderful Spirit we received when we believed into Christ includes both divinity and humanity! All that the Lord Jesus is and has passed through as a man (1 Tim. 2:5) is now ours in this Spirit. He is now the compound, life-giving, indwelling, sanctifying, and transforming Spirit (2 Cor. 3:18).
The Bountiful Supply for our Experience and Enjoyment
This Spirit is not just for our doctrinal understanding but for our experience and enjoyment. If I take some yoghurt, bananas, strawberries, protein powder, and blend them together, it is surely not for your study but for you to experience, enjoy and be supplied.
May we all appreciate that our God wants us to experience Him as such a “blended” compound Spirit full of rich nutrients for our daily “organic” salvation. That is, to be saved not just “judicially” from our sins by His blood, but saved “organically” in the life of Christ by the Spirit of life (Rom. 5:10; 8:2).
Intensified Sevenfold to Supply us to Carry out God’s Economy
In the final book, Revelation, this Spirit is not only compounded but intensified sevenfold to overcome the degradation of the church. He is even called the seven Spirits of God (Rev. 1:4; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6) for the recovery of the church. Today, we need more light. We may turn up our three-way bulbs to three-fold intensity in our home. But spiritually we need this seven-fold Spirit to accomplish God’s economy in this dark age.
May we daily enjoy the Spirit today as the compound, life-giving, indwelling, sevenfold intensified Spirit to fulfill God’s purpose, build up Christ’s Body and bring the Lord back.
