Christ Our Life

The four crucial elements of the Bible are Christ, the Spirit, life and the church. These are the extracts or the cream found in God’s word. Christ is the first crucial element from which the other three proceed. Christ is the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:17); the Spirit is life (John 6:63); and life produces the church (1 Cor. 3:6-9).

In this post we’ll go on to consider the third crucial element, life with a focus on how Christ can become our life.

How Christ Becomes Our Life—Col. 3:4

Christ is not only our Savior and Redeemer, but our life (Col. 3:4). For Christ to be our life is very crucial because it is only in such a way that we can be united and mingled with Him.

What can be united and mingled with us? Only something that is of life. Eating, drinking and breathing are all such matters of life. As we eat, drink and breathe, we’re united and mingled physically with our food, drink and the air.

This is exactly what the Lord desires to be to us spiritually. Since He is our life, we can abide in Him and He can abide in us (John 15:5). In such a way we are becoming one with Him, even as the branches with the vine (v. 1).

After telling His disciples that “He who eats me shall live because of Me” (John 6:57), He proceeded to tell them that “It is the Spirit that gives life” (John 6:63). Because through His death and resurrection He became the life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45), Christ can now be life to us.

Being One with the Lord in Our Spirit—1 Cor. 6:17

1 Corinthians 6:17 says, “But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.” It is so important to see that this union with the Lord can only be in our spirit. May we all practice to contact the Lord in our spirit moment by moment, even as we breathe the air, so that we are practically united and mingled with Him and He is able to transform us (2 Cor. 3:18). It is in such a way that we become one with Him, as His Body joined to Him as our Head (Eph. 4:16).
