Why Does Only Mankind Worship God?
Have you ever stopped to consider why it is that only mankind worships God in one form or another?
It’s quite odd when you pause to think about it.
Throughout history, mankind on every continent has put up some type of shrine or object to worship God, but no animal does the same.
Why? Because there’s something within humans that causes them to desire to worship God. So what’s the difference? Why does man have an innate desire to worship God when animals do not?
Because God created man in a very special way
The first reason is that God created man in a very special way. He created man in His image and likeness and with a spirit, a soul, and a body.
Genesis 1:26-27 says:
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 2:7 goes on to say:
And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
This formation of man was particular among all of God’s creatures. He created man in His image and with His likeness and breathed into His nostrils the breath of life, whereas all of the animals were created simply through God’s speaking which brought them into existence. This is the first way that man’s formation is particular.
The second way is that man is created with a spirit. This is the deepest part within man and the organ by which man contacts God to fellowship with Him. This part of man is filled with God’s life when He believes into God. The animals only possess a body and a soul, but man possesses a deeper part—the human spirit.
Zechariah 12:1 says:
…Thus saith Jehovah, who stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
As you can see, God created man with a spirit, and according to Zechariah 12:1, this spirit within man is on equal footing with the heavens and the earth. Why? Because God created the heavens and the earth for man, who is the center of God’s creation, and the center of man’s being is his human spirit. Thus, this spirit is very important in the eyes of God because it’s with this organ that man can receive God, contain Him, and fellowship with Him.
This human spirit is very important to man and to God. It reveals the meaning of human life, and it’s the primary thing that separates man from all the other created beings. It also answers the question that was posed above: Why does man have an innate desire to worship God when animals do not? It’s because man has a spirit made by God to receive Him, contain Him, and fellowship with Him. This very spirit within man explains the purpose of man’s existence and the way to contain God and be filled with Him in order to live a meaningful human life.
