Give Yourself to Love the Lord

This awesome spiritual song — “Give Yourself to Love the Lord” — became the song in my heart and spoke to me in a personal way. It was so nourishing that I couldn’t help but focus on it in this post. I also can’t help highlighting the importance of “giving yourself to love the Lord.”

The lyrics of this song are as follows:

Give yourself to love the Lord.
No other way is so prevailing
And no other way, no other way is so safe.

Give yourself to love the Lord.
No other way is so rich,
And so full, oh so full, of enjoyment.

Each morning we must rise up and say to Him,
“Lord Jesus, I love You.”

Give yourself to love the Lord.
Do not care for anything else;
Just love Him! Do not care!

We are not our own, Lord;
All we have we give to You.
Lord Jesus! Lord Jesus!
Lord Jesus, we love You!

Why does this simple song touch me so much?

It’s because this song causes me to fall in love with the Lord Jesus in a fresh way. It brings me into living contact with the Lord.

It is essential to holding to truth in love

Why would I find it worth sharing with you? There are two reasons. First, this blog is called “Holding to Truth in Love.” So loving the Lord is an integral part of what this blog is all about. It’s not just about learning more Bible doctrines. It’s about having a present, active participation in the divine realities revealed in God’s word. Practically, this means to have living personal touch with the Lord Jesus in God’s word.

It is only as we’re loving Him that He can live in us

The second reason why I’d like to share this song with you is simple. It’s because the real Christian life is not a religion, but this most wonderful Person, Jesus Christ Himself living in us. Galatians 2:20, begins by saying, “I am crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me…”

Since the Christian life is a Person, we need to ask, “How can I deal with such a living Person?” Here’s the answer: There is no other way than by love.

To love the Lord Jesus is to enjoy Him. It’s only as we’re loving and enjoying Him, that He has the way to live in us. In fact, in the Christian life, nothing works unless we’re loving the Lord Jesus.

For example, do you want to be holy? Holiness is simply Christ Himself. So just tell Him throughout the day, “Lord Jesus, I love You.” See what a difference it makes. Without trying to be holy, something will spontaneously happen and certain things in your life may fade away just by loving the Lord Jesus. At least, that was my experience.

Tell the Lord Jesus you love Him every morning:

“Lord Jesus, keep me loving You all the time. Keep me in Your love! Attract me with Yourself! Keep me all the time in Your loving presence!”

Simply pray such a prayer, even using the words of this song,  and see what a difference it  makes, what kind of love you’ll have for the Lord and what kind of life you’ll live. I believe that you’ll find yourself spontaneously living to the Lord Himself.
