The Scientific Way to Drink the Water of Life

The scientific way to drink the water of life

As believers in Christ, we need to see the way to drink the water of life.

It’s scientific, that is, it can be tested, again and again. By applying the divine principles revealed in the Bible and presented in this post you can enjoy the thirst-quenching of living water in a normal way–every day.

In the Gospel of John, the Lord Jesus told a thirsty Samaritan woman,

“If you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water” (John 4:10)

So what is this living water that Jesus promised?  And what is the scientific way to drink the water of life?

What is the water of life?

The water of life is the spiritual drink that the apostle Paul referred to in 1 Corinthians 10:4 where he said:

“And all drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank of a spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was Christ.”

A footnote in the Holy Bible Recovery Version on the “spiritual drink” in this verse says,

“Referring to the living water that flowed out of the cleft rock (Exo. 17:6), typifying the Spirit, who flowed out of the crucified and resurrected Christ, as our all-inclusive drink (John 7:37-39; 1 Cor. 12:13). For our running of the race we should all drink the same spiritual drink and should not drink anything other than the all-inclusive Spirit.” (1 Cor. 10:4, note 1)

This water is not merely the Spirit of God from eternity but the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the life-giving Spirit that the Lord Jesus became in His resurrection (Phil. 1:19; 1 Cor. 15:45).

This drinkable Spirit is not a different Spirit, but the unique Holy Spirit enriched with all the elements of Christ’s person and work. In this spiritual drink are all His divine attributes and human virtues–holiness, righteousness, wisdom, strength, love, joy, peace and whatever we need to live the Christian life.

The scientific way to drink the water of life

1. We need to be rightly positioned to drink the water of life.

In order to drink the water of life, we first need the right position. Through our faith in Christ and baptism in the one Spirit we have been positioned to drink the Spirit. First Corinthians 12:13 says,

“For also in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body…and were all given to drink one Spirit.

It’s like being immersed in a fresh, clean, flowing river. When you have that position it is so easy to open your mouth and drink in the flowing water. It is the same with the Spirit of life today. Once we’ve been immersed in such a Spirit, we’re rightly positioned to continually drink the Spirit.

2. We need to be thirsty.

Although the water of life is available and we have the right position, we won’t drink of it unless we’re thirsty.  That is why the Lord Jesus on the last day of a great Jewish feast cried out,

If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” (John 7:37)

If you’re reading these words yet feel that you’re short of thirst, simply tell the Lord,

“Lord Jesus, grant me Your mercy that I may be thirsty for You. Every day give me a fresh thirst to drink You as the water of life.”

3. We need to come to the Lord.

Then we still need to come to Lord. The Bible ends with such a call to come. Revelation 22:17 says,

“...And let him who is thirsty come; let him who wills take the water of life freely.

The best time to come to the Lord is first thing in the morning…and then continue to  come to Him throughout the day. By coming to Jesus first thing each morning, you set the direction for your entire day. Just say,

“Lord Jesus, I come to You right now. Thank you for this new day to drink You.”

Here is a hymn on coming to the Lord to drink of Him. I often sing this hymn in the morning as a help to my coming to Him to drink the living water.

4. We need to speak to the Lord, the Rock cleft for us.

Since Christ as the rock of ages has already been smitten, crucified, we only need to “speak to the rock.”

In Exodus 17:6, God commanded Moses to strike the rock that the water may gush out for the people to drink. This signified that Christ had to be crucified so that the living water could flow out from His pierced side, to supply us (John 19:34).

However, in Numbers 20:8, God charged Moses only to speak to the rock. This shows us that since Christ has already been crucified to redeem us, He does not need to die again. Instead, we just need to speak to Him, as the rock flowing out living water.

When we speak to the Lord Jesus, He will give us the living water. So we need to practice daily speaking to the Lord Jesus–the more, the better.

5. We need to ask the Lord Jesus to give us the living water.

When we speak to the Lord, we need to be specific. We should simply ask Him for a drink of living water. This is exactly what the the Lord Jesus said to the Samaritan woman in John 4:10:

“…If you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

May we also believe the Lord’s word of promise and boldly ask Him,

“Lord Jesus, I’m thirsty! Give me a drink of the living water.”

6. Finally, we need to contact God the Spirit in our human spirit and in truthfulness.

In John 4:24, after inviting the Samaritan woman to ask for the living water, He went on to tell her,

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truthfulness.”

Since God’s substance is Spirit, we need to exercise our spirit, which is of the same substance He is, to contact Him and receive Him as our refreshing drink.

The simplest way I know to exercise our spirit is to call on the name of Jesus.  When you say, “Lord Jesus!” or “Jesus is Lord!”–you touch His Spirit with your spirit and enjoy a refreshing drink of living water. Just try it and see.

5 ways to speak to the Lord to drink the water of life

We need to draw water from the springs of salvation by speaking to the Lord (Isa. 12:3-5). Here are six ways you can practice speaking to the Lord daily to practice to drink the water of life:

1. Confess your sins–1 John 1:9.

2. Praise the Lord–Phil. 4:4.

3. Thank the Lord–Eph. 5:20.

4. Call on His name–Rom. 10:12-13.

5.  Sing to the Lord–Eph. 5:18-19.

Glad you enjoyed the post. How wonderful that God went through a process so that we can drink Him as the Spirit (John 7:237-39; 1 Cor. 12:13b). By calling on the name of the Lord Jesus, He becomes so rich to us, saving us moment by moment (Rom. 10:12-13; 1 Cor. 12:3b). Thank you for your encouraging comment.
