Knowing the Two Spirits, the Spirit with Your Spirit
One of the first things you need to learn after receiving the Lord Jesus as your Savior is the two spirits, the Holy Spirit joined with your human spirit.
If you’ve recently believed in Christ, this is an awesome discovery! You didn’t just receive the forgiveness of your sins, and a future salvation from God’s eternal judgment.
You received something much more present and practical—God’s Spirit with your spirit for you to experience every day.
In this post we’ll consider the awesome truth of these two spirits joined together as one and how you can experience them in your daily life.
What are the two spirits?
If you’re going to get to know the Lord Jesus as the wonderful Person who lives inside you, you need to know who He is and where He is.
Your spirit—His container
First, God created you with a human spirit to receive and contain Him.
Your spirit is the organ created by God to contact Him, receive Him, and contain Him. From the moment you believe in Christ, your spirit is born anew, or regenerated (John 3:16, 6). Such a regenerated spirit becomes the container for the Lord.
Romans 8:10 says,
“But if Christ is in you…the spirit is life because of righteousness.”
The enlivened spirit in this verse is our regenerated human spirit as Christ’s dwelling place. If we want to continue to experience and enjoy Christ after receiving Him, we need to know where He dwells, that is, in our spirit (2 Tim. 4:22).

His Spirit—the content
Second, how can Christ our Savior, become our content and live in us?
It is only by His becoming a life-giving Spirit. First Corinthians 15:45b says,
“The last Adam became a life-giving Spirit.”
Christ became such a life-giving Spirit so He can breathe Himself into our spirit to be our content—to fill us with Himself (John 20:22).
This required the Lord Jesus to take two great steps:
First, Christ became flesh, to share in our human blood and flesh so He could shed His sinless, human blood as the price for our redemption (John 1:14; 1 Pet. 1:18-19). It is only in this way that He could be the “Lamb of God” to take away all our sins (John 1:29).
Second, after dying for our sins, Christ was resurrected on the third day (1 Cor. 15:3-4). In His resurrection He became a life-giving Spirit to impart Himself as life into our spirit so that He could become our life (Col. 3:4).
Have you received His Spirit into your spirit?
Christ has already paid the highest price to satisfy God’s righteous requirements. He has also become such an available Spirit to be received by you. He only asks that you receive Him by believing into His name. John 1:12-13 says,
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, to those who believe into His name, who were begotten…of God.
If you turn your heart to Him and open your mouth to confess His name, His Spirit will enter into your spirit and become rich to you. Pray right now,
Lord Jesus! O Lord Jesus! I open to You. Thank you for becoming a man and dying on the cross for all my sins. Praise you that You resurrected from the dead and became the live-giving Spirit so You can be my life. I believe into Your name and receive You as my Savior and life. Come into my spirit and fill me with Yourself.”
We need to see these two spirits from the Bible
There are three Bible verses that reveal these two spirits together:
John 3:6 says,
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
This refers to your being born of God in your spirit. It’s His Spirit entering into your spirit that makes you a child of God. If you’ve prayed to receive the Lord Jesus, He as the Spirit is now dwelling in your spirit.
Romans 8:16 says,
“The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God.
After believing into Christ to become God’s child, His Spirit within your spirit witnesses to this divine fact. Whenever you confess “I have believed in Jesus. I am a child of God.” His Spirit witnesses within you to this reality giving you the assurance of your salvation.
John 4:24 says,
“God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truthfulness.”
You need to continue to use your spirit every day to contact God who is Spirit in order to render Him the true worship He is seeking. This kind of contact is the way to drink the living water to supply you and quench your inner thirst (John 4:14).
Finally, these two spirits joined as one become the new source for your living the Christian life. First Corinthians 6:17 says,
“But He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.”
It is these two spirits—His divine Spirit and your regenerated spirit—joined as one spirit within you that is the secret for you to live the Christian life.
Daily exercise your spirit to contact His Spirit by calling on the Lord and praying
Now that you’ve become one spirit with the Lord, how can you apply the two spirits to your daily Christian life?
Call on the Lord
Each morning—before your thoughts are consumed with the days activities—practice to call on the Lord. While you’re getting up, while you’re do your daily tasks—showering, cooking, driving or walking—grasp every opportunity to call on His name.
In Romans 10:12-13 it says,
“…the same Lord is Lord of all and rich to all who call upon Him; for “whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
From deep within—with your whole being— simply cry out,
O Lord! Lord Jesus! Lord, I love You! Lord Jesus, I open to You today!
Pray in your spirit
First Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Unceasingly pray.”
Then Ephesians 6:18 says, “ By means of all prayer and petition, praying at every time in spirit…”
Continue to exercise your spirit by praying in a normal conversing way with the Lord—“Lord I still love You.” Such an unceasing prayer is simply to stay in contact with the Lord in your spirit. It means that you keep breathing Him.
Personally, I like to go for a walk in the morning and have a personal time just to call on the Lord, pray and pray-read a few Bible verses. This practice is extremely helpful to your Christian life and will cause you to be strengthened in your spirit so that you can live in one spirit with the Lord.
If you’ve been helped by getting to know these two spirits and received profit from exercising your spirit to call on the Lord and pray, take a moment to confirm with a comment.

What a great article I have it saved on my i phone as I read it again and again. What a wonderful knowing I am joined with the Lord Jesus. Now to figure out how to operate from my spirit. God has led me to doscover man being spirit soul body. Thank you again for great article.
First, we need a vision to see that we are a being of three parts–spirit, soul and body. Second, we need to see that, as reborn, or regenerated believers, we have the Spirit with our spirit (John 3:6; Rom. 8:16). Now we need to go on to practice living by the two spirits joined as one. It’s so simple to touch the Spirit with your spirit. Simply call on the name of the Lord. In 1 Cor. 12:3 its says no one can say “Jesus is Lord!” or “Lord Jesus!” except in the Holy Spirit. Practice call on the Lord as your spiritual deep breathing. Then continue to speak to the Lord from the depth of your being. That is, to pray in spirit. Finally, practice to do everything according to the sense of the Spirit–the sense of life and peace from your spirit (Rom. 8:6). Here is a helpful excerpt by Witness Lee on “knowing the Spirit by the sense of the spirit.”
I found great peace in knowing that Jesus is a person,so calling him ,he answers with great peace.I speak to him knowing beyond a shadow of doubt that he is rich to all who call on his name.I am satisfied that he came into my heart when I invited him by his Spirit.life giving Spirit entered into my spirit and we became one.what a divine romance! I am very great full that he forgave my sins and lives in me.
What a precious experience! I’m so glad you discovered the joy of calling on the Lord Jesus which made Christ so rich to you! Knowing Christ as the life-giving Spirit with your spirit is really the secret to entering into the divine romance. Thank you for your confirming comment.
It really helpful. I am blessed
Glad you were blessed by the post. It is great blessing to discover that the Lord as the Spirit lives in our spirit (Rom. 8:9-10; 2 Tim. 4:22). In fact, discovering our spirit is the key to our present, practical experience of the Lord Jesus. We can contact Him, receive Him and experience Him every day by using our spirit to call, sing, praise and pray. The simplest way I’ve found is simply to call on the Lord’s name—”Lord Jesus!”— from deep within. When we say, “Lord Jesus”, or “Jesus is Lord!” we’re in the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:3). In this way we drink the Spirit (v. 13), and our spiritual thirst is quenched and we are inwardly satisfied. Thanks for your comment
