10 Short Morning Prayers We Can Pray to the Lord

Here are 10 short morning prayers we can pray to the Lord

The morning is the best time to spend in the Lord’s presence by reading His Word. It’s also an excellent time to begin the day by fellowshipping with the Lord in prayer.

But sometimes it can be difficult to know what to pray. Should you pray for yourself, for your family, or for your friends? How should you start? Should you pray the same prayers or try something new? Should you pray something from the Bible or come up with something on your own?

The answers to these questions depend on our personal experience and the Lord’s leading. However, there are some short morning prayers we can pray to begin each day by contacting the Lord. Whether we decide to pray one or all of these prayers, each of them can help us to simplify our time with the Lord and to begin our day by contacting Him.

Prayer #1: “Oh, Lord Jesus.”

One of the first ways we can pray is simply to call on the Lord’s name. As soon as we get out of bed, we can breathe in the Lord by calling, “Oh, Lord Jesus.”

This is good way to begin the day by contacting the Lord. What better way is there to touch our wonderful Lord than by calling on His name? When we call, we get the person of the name, and we begin to be revived and refreshed. We can do this as soon as we wake up, and we can continue as we get ready for our day.

Prayer #2: “Lord Jesus, I love you.”

The next thing we can say to the Lord is, “Lord Jesus, I love you.” It’s good to begin the day by telling the Lord that we love Him. Our goal, based on Revelation 2:4, is that He would be our first love and our best love. We can practice this by telling the Lord that we love Him first thing in the morning, and we can continue by telling the Lord that we love Him throughout the day.

Prayer #3: “Lord Jesus, thank you for today.”

Thanking the Lord is an excellent way to start the day. We can tell Him, “Lord Jesus, thank you for today, thank you for my spirit, and thank you that I can pray.” We can also thank Him for many other things. We can thank Him for another day to gain Him and to be found in Him, and we can thank Him for dying for us and for shedding His precious blood for us. No matter what we choose to thank Him for, it’s good to start the day by thanking the Lord.

Prayer #4: “Lord Jesus, wash me in your precious, prevailing, and efficacious blood.”

The next thing we can pray is for the Lord to wash us in His precious, prevailing, and efficacious blood. It’s so marvelous that the Lord died for us and shed His blood for us. Every morning we can freshly apply His blood and ask Him to wash from all of our sins. We can continue by confessing any sins that the Lord brings to our attention. There’s no need to spend all of our time attempting to come up with sins to confess, but we can spend a little time to confess anything that the Lord touches us with related to the previous day or our past.

Prayer #5: “Lord Jesus, I open my being and turn my heart to you.”

After spending some time to confess our sins, we can take a minute to turn our heart to the Lord. We can pray, “Lord Jesus, I open my being and turn my heart to you.” By doing this, we turn away from everything else and turn our heart to the Lord. Second Corinthians 3:16 says, “But whenever the heart turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” As we turn to the Lord, any veils on our heart are taken away, and we can spend time with the Lord face to face. Second Corinthians 3:18 tells us that in doing so, we behold and reflect like a mirror the glory of the Lord and are transformed into His image from glory to glory.

Prayer #6: “Oh Lord, grant me today’s supply of grace.”

In addition to turning our heart to the Lord, we can ask Him to grant us our daily supply of grace. In Matthew 6:11 the Lord instructs us to pray for our daily bread. We can pray this by asking the Lord for our daily supply of grace. We can begin the day by asking Him for that day’s portion of grace, and the Lord will respond by supplying us with more of His grace and more of Himself.

Prayer #7: “Oh Lord, grant me a normal day of growing in life.”

Each day we also want to grow in life. The Lord’s goal is that we would be brought on to maturity and full sonship. (See these verses for more on maturity and growing in life: 1 Corinthians 3:7, 14:20, and 16:13; Ephesians 4:13; Philippians 3:15; and Hebrews 5:14).

We don’t want to remain the same but want to grow in the divine life and be brought on to maturity. However, this isn’t something that happens miraculously or overnight. It’s something that happens little by little and day by day. An infant doesn’t become an adult overnight. They grow a little bit every day by eating milk, baby food, and eventually solid food. Over time, each infant grows to be a full-grown person. Thus, every morning we can pray, “Lord, grant me a normal day of growing in life. Cause me to grow in your life today.”

Pray #8: “Oh Lord, strengthen me with power through your spirit into the inner man.”

The apostle Paul prays in Ephesians 3:16 that God the Father would grant us “according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit into the inner man.” Paul’s prayer here shows that God’s desire is that we would be strengthened with power through the Spirit into the inner man, our human spirit. We can cooperate with this desire by asking the Lord every day to strengthen us with power through His Spirit into the inner man.

Prayer #9: “Oh Lord, make your home in my heart through faith.”

The apostle Paul also prays in Ephesians 3:17-19 “that Christ may make His home in your hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be full of strength to apprehend with all the saints what the breadth and length and height and depth are and to know the knowledge-surpassing love of Christ, that you may be filled unto all the full knowledge of God.” Thus, we can pray every morning, “Lord, make your home in my heart through faith today. I open my heart to you. Make my heart your home a little more today. Dear Lord, make your home in every room of my heart.”

Prayer #10: “Oh Lord, keep me from temptation and from the evil one.”

In Matthew 6:13, the Lord instructs us to pray that we would not be brought into temptation but would be delivered from the evil one. We may think that we can withstand sin, but really, we need the Lord’s covering that He would keep us from temptation and deliver us from the evil one. We are weak and shouldn’t put any trust in ourselves. Instead, we should pray that the Lord would deliver us from temptation and from the evil one.

Wrap-up

As you can see, these are ten excellent short morning prayers we can pray every morning. Whether you decide to pray one, a few, or all of them, I hope this post will help you spend time in prayer with the Lord. May we all go on to pursue Christ, to know Him, and to be found in Him day by day and morning by morning.

What is your experience with praying short prayers to the Lord in the morning? Do you have any prayers you would add to this list? Are you planning to pray some of these prayers during your morning time with the Lord? Leave a comment so we can discuss and have further fellowship.

This was such an enjoyable post! We need to be reminded to pray these prayers to our dear Lord Jesus.

    1. Joe Putnam

Thanks, Monica. I’m glad you liked the post. 🙂

      1. marie hyppolite

I am new here but enjoy your post. To start my day I usually give thanks for the night and a new day and all He does for me whether I understand it or not, as long as it is His will it is good. I give thanks for keeping my family safe, I work night shift, I am a nurse so I give thanks for the night and for keeping my mind sharp to care for the patients and that all of them are safe under my care. I call on Him and talk about Him to others, talk to Him as a friend all day long,He keeps me balance.

        1. Tom Smith

That’s great! it is so good to bring the Lord into every aspect of your daily life. calling on Him, talking Him and thanking Him for everything. This keeps you in His divine transmission so that he can supply you with Himself, and live in you the life that God desires–Christ living in you (Gal. 2:20).

    2. Yes, this post is very helpful to me. This is so enjoyable. I am so thankful to the Lord for releasing this post to His children. Amen.

  2. Very helpful post, Joe. I love all of these simple yet essential prayers. I appreciate that we can contact the Lord in such a simple and genuine way as we begin our day with Him. There’s no need for us to compose complex, lofty prayers, although we can certainly do this if we feel led to – we can simply call on the Lord’s name, open our being to Him, express our love for Him, and ask Him to make His home in our heart a little more. Through these simple prayers, the Lord can gain a little more ground in us every day. I also enjoy praying: “Lord, I give myself to you. Do whatever you would like to do in me, with me, and through me.”

    1. Joe Putnam

Hi John-Paul, I really like the prayer you’ve added to this list. It’s so good to give the Lord the ground to work in us and through us.

  3. Becca

Amen! What a simple way to enjoy the Lord!

    1. Joe Putnam

      Amen! 🙂

  4. I can wholeheartedly say AMEN to these prayers… I was looking through all of them, and it is only 2-3 that I don’t habitually pray to the Lord. Especially in the morning, it’s good to just OPEN to the Lord and pray short prayers to Him. Sometimes we feel the need of being cleansed by His blood, and the prayer #4 is so sweet…. Short and living prayers, according to the feeling within – so precious, and so sweet!

    1. Joe Putnam

I agree about prayer number four. It’s so helpful to see that the Lord’s blood washes away all of our sins. We can apply the blood every morning to assure ourselves that we are washed in His precious, prevailing blood.

  5. Printing this out for my walk tomorrow morning….

    1. Joe Putnam

      Awesome! 🙂

  6. Garrett Hageman

We can also pray, Lord, set up Your throne in the center of my being! According to Rev. 22:1-2, the throne of God and of the Lamb is in the center of the New Jerusalem. The river of water of life issues from the throne. On this side and on that side of the river is the tree of life. When we are under the throne, under the Lord’s ruling presence, we enjoy the river and the tree, signifying the Lord Himself as our moment by moment supply. How much we need Him to life the Christian life! We could never make it on our own! Praise the Lord!

    1. Joe Putnam

Hi Garrett, I really enjoy this prayer as well. We can enthrone the Lord in the morning by asking Him to set up His throne in the center of our being.

      1. Mehala

We can include at the end, “Lord cover me with Yourself.” Amen. Thank you for this post! This is very helpful for me, as well as I forwarded it to others. Thank You, Lord Jesus for everything, You are everything to us. Amen.

        1. Tom Smith

Yes, there are many more items that could be added to this list of 10 short prayers…as long as they help us to focus on Christ, contact Him and receive Him as our life. Glad you enjoyed the post. Thanks for taking the time to share it with others.

    2. Thanks Garrett; a wonderful prayer. Lord, establish the realities of New Jerusalem in our being now.

  11. Vicki Bean

Thank you brother for posting these simple yet wonderful and crucial prayers we can and need to pray every morning. And these points are backed up by the Word. This is something I want to hand print out and give to a few new saints who have been added to the Church here in Edmond, OK.
I really believe praying one or two or all of these first thing in the morning will prime out spirit to begin a wonderful time/day w our Lord!
By the way, my husband and I pray most if not all these prayers daily and have for years! Again I just want to thank you brother for putting this on fb and making it available to all the saints!

    1. Joe Putnam

Hi Vickie, thank you for the comment. These prayers really are helpful to prime our spirit in the morning and to help us touch the Lord. I hope these prayers really help the ones you print them out for.

  12. Vicki Bean

Also, because I really would love to have this posted on my fb sight, can someone help me get it posted? I am so v new at this and this one is above my knowledge/experience to do :). Thank you dear saints!!!

    1. Joe Putnam

The easiest way to post this is to click the Facebook like button above. The second easiest way is to copy the link for the post and then to post it manually as a Facebook update. Both of these options should work. 🙂

      1. Vicki Bean

Brother, I just saw your answer to my question!! Goodness! Sorry it took me so long to respond brother. Thank you for your help!

  13. These are very helpful suggestions for simple prayers. Thank you so much for sharing.

Wondering though, is there an account in the Bible of such simple prayers?

    1. The most simple prayer I can think of is in the gospels when one of the disciples ask the Lord to teach them how to pray. It’s very simple, only a conversation actually, but a great example of how we can pray to the Lord. In the gospels, the disciples spoke to the Lord and asked Him questions in person; today, we can speak to the Lord and ask Him questions as the one who’s residing in our spirit.

  14. Prayer is really important to practice in our christian life. The moment we pray we are one with the Lord praying in our spirit. After we exercise our spirit to pray we experience to be revived and strengthened.May the Lord cause us to be a man of prayer.

  15. Joyce

    Hi
Jesus is our first friend, first(nouriture), first everything, without him we are nothing. So it is very important to wake up with Jesus in front of us.
So our day is calm and goes on smoothly

    1. Hi Joyce,

I agree! Jesus is our best friend, our closest companion, and everything that we need. It’s good to start the day by contacting Him and fellowshipping with Him. One of my favorites ways to do this is to pray, “Lord Jesus, I love you. Thank you for today.”

  16. Rosita

Thank you, how can I can post this in Facebook?

    1. Tom Smith

To share the post on Facebook, simply click on the post, take the post URL (not the home page) and paste into the “Update status” box in Facebook–where it says “what’s on your mind?” Before the link you may want to say a sentence or two about why you liked the post. (When the post shows up, you can delete the URL script if you like.) Hope that helps

Glad you enjoyed the post. Sometimes it helps to have a few short prayers to direct your time with the Lord. But don’t make it formal, or a ritual. Always stay open to the Lord. Pray from your deepest part, your spirit. Then the Lord can flow through you to pray out something more that is on His heart.

    1. Tom Smith

Glad the post helped. Our real need is God Himself. Prayer is the means for us to contact Him and absorb Him into our being. Even more than the answers to prayer, we need to continually contact God. When we contact His Spirit with our spirit (John 4:24) we drink of Him as the water of life (v. 14). The simplest way to contact God is to call on the name of Jesus. Just cry out to Him from the depth of your being, “Lord Jesus! O Lord Jesus.” He promises to be rich to us and save us whenever we call on Hims name (Rom. 10:12-13). May the Lord bring salvation and comfort to your family and your aunt Wanda.

    2. Hi there, i just came across your thx and what u are going thourgh, im going thourgh the same thing, may you be blessed in or lord Jesus name x

      Israel,

Glad you enjoyed our post on 10 short morning prayers. It is so good to start each day practicing to fellowship with the wonderful Person who lives in our spirit, our dear Lord Jesus. These 10 prayers are not for merely for reciting but to help us learn to touch Him by calling on His name telling Him that we love Him, etc. Praying in this way we can learn to pray unceasing, moment by moment exhaling what we are and inhaling what He is. In this way we live Christ in our daily life.

Glad you enjoyed our post on 10 Short Morning Prayers. Such prayers are a simple way to turn our heart to Lord in the morning so that the divine life within can freely flow through us. Then, according to the Lord’s leading, we should spontaneously pray out whatever the Spirit of the Lord is initiating within us and moving us to pray–whether in thanks, praise, petition, confession or intercession. Thanks for your confirming comment.

    1. Tom Smith

I would encourage you to go through our 12 posts on the “Prayer Life” page. Then set a time each day to spend with the Lord to pray. For a start, one of the basic matters to effective prayer is matching prayer and the word. For this simple practice of pray-reading the word, I would recommend a post entitled 12 Tips on How to Pray-read the Word of God to be Spiritually Nourished
For a deeper seeking into the matter of prayer I would also recommend reading through Lessons on Prayer by Witness Lee. You can read it freely on MinistryBooks.org.

  42. kenechukwu mark

Is there anything like network created jst for discussion of biblical issues, I’d like to join Mr Tom

    1. Tom Smith

I’m sure that there are many Christian social networks you can find to discuss various issues. However, I wouldn’t know which ones to recommend. As far as Holding to Truth (HTL), I’d be happy to share in relevant fellowship about questions that are focused on Christ being life to us for the building up of His Body the church. If there are such questions or topics you’d like to bring up you can follow the social links on the right sidebar on the HTL homepage to our Facebook page or Google+ page or just use the Contact page on the blog itself.

  43. kenechukwu mark

Prayer is the way for us to contact God in our spirit and absorb all the riches of His being into ours. May we learn to pray such simple, direct, God-contacting prayers with our spirit so that we make such a vital connection with Him every day. Glad you enjoyed the post.

  46. Claudia Rocha

“Thank you Jesus for this new day!” “Goodmorning Holy Spirit!” “This is the day that the Lord has made I will rejoice and be glad in it!” Amen. This is my prayer as soon as I wake up every morning. I want to thank you for sharing this short prayers. Loved each and every explanation that was given after each one of them. Really helped me alot! Awesome post! BLESSINGS! GREAT DAY!

    1. Tom Smith

Glad you enjoyed the post. It is so good to begin each day by coming to the Lord. Having a few short prayers to begin with helps us to enter into fellowship with the Lord. My favorite way to begin my prayer time with the Lord is simply to call on the name of the Lord Jesus a few times. I’m reminded from Romans 10:12-13 that the Lord promises to be rich to all who call upon Him for whoever calls upon His name will be saved. Although we may be saved eternally, we still need to be saved in a moment-by-moment way from our anger, anxiety, pride and offenses, etc. When we call “Lord Jesus!” He supplies us with what He is (as love, peace, joy, wisdom, comfort and more) to meet the need of the situation before us. This is the deep spiritual breathing we need to be a healthy, normal Christian.

  47. Mary Wayne Weison

Love this so very much and yes I will be using that in the future we need many short or long times with the Lord!

    1. Tom Smith

Glad you enjoyed the 10 short prayers. The basic point in prayer is to contact God who is Spirit with our spirit (John 4:24). A very simple way to contact Him is to call upon the name of the Lord Jesus. Paul said that no one can say Jesus is Lord or Lord Jesus except in the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:3). Call calling on the Lord brings us into intimate contact with the Lord. I try to call on Him each day especially as I start my day. Thanks for the comment.

  48. Emma Kgosiesele

Awesome stuff. I really enjoyed the short prayers. The first three are so simple and easy to recite. I am so blessed to have come across this site. Thank you Jesus for your love. God bless.

    1. Tom Smith

When we realize that the real significance of prayer is to contact God with our spirit and to absorb God, then we can appreciate how such simple spirit-exercising prayers are so helpful and bring us the divine supply of grace to live a normal Christian life. Thanks for your confirming comment

  49. Ruth Lariosa

This is a wonderful reminder to us that our God is always available we can always contact Him through simple prayers, starting our day with prayers the moment we open our eyes embrace God with prayers..

    1. Tom Smith

  50. Dodibelle Marie Sultan

Thank you for this post. And let me ask you this question; why do I sometimes, and most often cry, a little, when I pray?

    1. Tom Smith

Shedding tears from a deep touching of the heart are precious to the Lord. Here is an excerpt on the precious function of tears from the writings of a 20th century martyr, Watchman Nee. Hannah, the mother of Samuel, wept as she poured out her heart to the Lord (1 Sam. 1:7). Such tears are precious to God. Thanks for the comment.

Glad you found these prayers helpful. It is so helpful to pray prayers that enable to contact the Lord who is the Spirit with our spirit to render Him the true worship He is seeking. In such a way we are also revived and overcoming in our Christian life. Thanks for the comment.
