How Can I Be Sure I’m Saved?

“How can I be sure I’m saved?” This was the question that came up in my heart as a young Christian and one that I believe troubles many just like it troubled me. I knew that the Bible was God’s word and that if someone believed in the Lord Jesus they would be saved and have eternal life. But I still doubted about my own salvation.

In this post we’ll consider three proofs that gave me the assurance that I needed. I hope they’ll do the same for you.

How can I be sure I’m saved? Here are three proofs.

1. The Bible says so

First John 5:13 says, “I have written these things to you that you may know that you have eternal life, to you who believe in the name of the Son of God.” This indicates that God wants you to know that you’re saved, and also that the written words of the Bible are a proof to a believer that they’re really saved. For example, Romans 10:13 says, For “whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” So right now just call on the name of the Lord Jesus from the depths of your being—“Lord Jesus! Lord Jesus! Then tell Him, “Lord Jesus, I believe into You! I believe that You died for my sins and rose from the dead!”

So, did you call on the Lord Jesus? Yes? Then you can hold God to His word and say, “Thank you dear Lord, based on Your word in Romans 10:13, I know that I’m saved.”

2. The Holy Spirit Witnesses with Our Spirit

Not only do we have the proof by the Bible in our hands, but we also have the proof by the Holy Spirit’s witnessing with our spirit. Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are the children of God.” This was the part that really sealed it for me. I believed the Bible, but I would question in my mind, “Did I really believe in the Lord?” But then one day, I discovered a deeper part of my being—my human spirit. (There is such a spirit in every human being created with the special function of contacting God, receiving God, and touching the reality of God. But not until we receive Christ do we begin to realize its function.)  So when I called on the name of the Lord Jesus, something wonderful happened. I experienced the witnessing of the Holy Spirit deep within me, assuring me that I was a child of God.

I expect the reason many Bible-believing Christians doubt their salvation is that they don’t experience such a definite witnessing of the Holy Spirit with their spirit. One verse that helped me in this regard was 1 Corinthians 12:3, which ends, “…no one can say, Jesus is Lord! except in the Holy Spirit.” So when I called on the Lord Jesus, I experienced being in the Holy Spirit and realized His witness deep within me that I was a child of God.

To enjoy this witnessing, don’t be a silent Christian. Declare your faith to the Lord Himself, to someone you love, and even to the creation. Tell the birds and flowers, “I believe in the Lord Jesus!” See if you don’t enjoy the Holy Spirit’s witnessing deep within you.

3. Love for Our Fellow Believers

The last proof that helped me to know that I was really saved was the genuine love I had for other Christians. Sometimes, even without talking to them, I would have a feeling within that they were also believers and sense such a sweet feeling toward them. This was also a proof that I was genuinely saved. In 1 John 3:14, the apostle John said, “We know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers.”

By these three simple proofs: 1) the proof by God’s word outside of us, 2) the proof by the Holy Spirit’s witnessing with our spirit, and 3) the proof by our love for our fellow believers, we can know that we’re saved. When we know that we are really saved and are children of God, we have the necessary foundation to begin a joyful Christian life and grow up in God’s salvation.

May the Lord bless you with the full assurance of the wonderful salvation we have received in Christ. Based on God’s sure word in the Scriptures (1 John 5:13), the witness of the Spirit with our spirit (Rom. 8:16) and the love for our fellow believers in Christ (1 John 3:14), we can know with assurance that we are really saved.
